Tamiya SdKfz 251/1 Ausf C 1/35

This is all Peter's (takeslousyphotos) fault. With his great build of the Dragon 251/6 Ausf 'C', he got me looking at this classic vehicle seriously. Having three in the stash (and one in the way), I decided to start a little long term project to build some of the many variants available in kit form.

To start the 'Family' I decided to go with the good old Tamiya 'Hanomag' which, I believe, came out some 38 years ago . I have gone with this as it will be a simple build compared to the AFV Club 251/20 'UHU' that is in the stash which has more parts in the infrared lamp than this kit has in total....

Just to make it clear, this was never called the Hanomag. Hanomag is part of the name of a company that built part of it. Also, some kits, this one included, has a small water tank between and to the rear of the two front seats. This was a feature only found in the Sdkfz 251/8 Ambulance variant. Ironically, the Tamiya instructions show the fitting of this part next to a reference picture that clearly shows it not being there lol.

So, a quick build, easy paint low part count kit..... should be easy enough  Not sure if I will use the figures or not but I have seen worse.

Not my fault...... The big boys did it then they ran away.......... I'll have to watch this.

Aah the memories of youth come flooding back! Front wheels that I couldn't get to sit flush with the ground, rear doors that wouldn't fit together... happy days!

Yeh, real modelling eh Patrick :D

Modelling tip for doors that don't fit together...... Leave 'em open ;)

Only real issue with the plastic I have spotted is the sink mark on the upper hull sides, clearly visible on the second picture above.

OK, off to a flying starts as I have some uninterrupted modelling time for once:rolleyes:

First job was to slap some Mr Surfacer into those pesky sink marks so it can be setting while I get going.

Next up was to build the dash and firewall bits. Love the way Tamiya totally disregard the iconic back sloping steering wheel and make it vertical.

Then onto the front suspension and steering bits.

Quickly followed by the axels and the floor pan

image_6.jpe

Then onto the rear doors and, after Patricks comment above about them not going together, a bit of a mock up test fit. Sorry Patrick, they fit just fine ;)

Quick test fit of the wheels and it is starting to look like a 250/1 :D

Break for lunch and I will crack on later.

This one isn't my favorite....but I must admit, that the interior part, give to you a magnificent oportunity for a worked weathering work.... :smiling3:

By the way, nice and clean build so far!

Cheers guys

Had my first oppertunity to try out my Xmas present extractor, boy what a difference that makes.

So, build finished, a splash of primer and the grey inside. Not going to town on this one as I just wanted a quick OOB build for the fun of it, later versions and better kits will bring the detailing on. Bit of weathering to do on the inside then I can get the top glued on and crack on. This is like waiting for paint to dry...... In fact, that is exactly what I am doing lol

And a rough idea of how it looks with the top on.

Thanks Monica :smiling3: . The seats are Valejo Model Air Mud Brown, 71037. This is a tad light but I am banking on it darkening down in weathering. Just been able to satin varnish it so weathering the inside starts in the morning.

Got the insides weathered up, like I said, not going to town on this one as later kits will be more detailed.

The top is now glued on and ready for paint. Decided to close the rear doors permanently as, again, the interior is really sparse.

image_16.jpe

So, on with the painting, tracks and wheels.
