The Border Models 1/32 Lancaster BI/III

It is very delicate and I am aware that in many kits it was broken and warped. Luckily in mine, along with the transparencies, it is in good condition.

The Border Models 1/32 Lancaster BI/III

I found that the top-rear insurt fits perfectly. Glued into place I then attached some aerial and a screen. I have also been working on the internal canopy framing getting it ready for airbrushing. There is just a little filler needed in three places where the fuselage joins will show...

The Border Models 1/32 Lancaster BI/III

That is a somewhat strange comment. Long before the kit was released and while WNW were still developing the kit WNW announced the Cockpit version and had a mock up on display at Telford. And, yes the Mk I/III did sell well enough for them to release the Dambusters version as well.

The Border Models 1/32 Lancaster BI/III

Border’s 1/35 scale kits are of no interest to me, I won’t touch them with a barge pole. I am only interested in 1/32 (and the odd 1/48). I am certainly not saying that their own kits are any good at all. The Lanc is different as they did not commission/design it and only bought the moulds...

The Border Models 1/32 Lancaster BI/III

Hi Chris. No, not really. There could be all sorts of reasons for such issues and I do not rule out something I did. In this case the model was designed by Wingnut Wings of course, Border bought the moulds and had no idea what WNW intended for instructions order of build etc. Also WNW had not...

The Border Models 1/32 Lancaster BI/III

I have made some slow progress and this is no kit for beginners! As you can see the bomb bay is in place. After some cutting and filing it went together. Firstly fitting the outer front fuselage sides has been a real struggle. I have done this over several days, having to break off before...

    Cleaning after lacquer paint

I find Mr Tool Cleaner to be excellent for this. It is very strong stuff. By all means try the hardware store lacquer or cellulose thinner as an alternative but I found it had a bad smell, worse than the MTC or MLT or lacquer paint. Also you will find that ipa works well though sometimes you...

The Border Models 1/32 Lancaster BI/III

But, of course, those writing the instructions were not the same people who designed the kit. Border have a poor reputation for the instructions on their own kits so it’s hardly surprising they have made a mess of these.

    Non fogging CA glue

DSPAE produce a non-fogging ca that works well and I have used it many times on canopies. Be aware that there is a ‘low-fogging’ type as well but I have not used it and don’t know exactly what ‘low-fogging’ means. https://www.scalemodelshop.co.uk/dspiae-non-fogging-instant-ca-p19177/

Back to the bench with this big Lanc. On Nigels Modeling Bench he points out that the bomb bay needs fitting to the nose section early on as it won’t fit if fitted as per instructions. Well Nigel might have pointed out that even at this early stage it is difficult to fit and, to do so, I...

    Tamiya paint/painting instructions

The tanks were, I am sure, a red oxide. So look for a red oxide paint from another company. I would suggest base research on-line to establish the right colours. There is a lot of information available. Most of the time you can pretty much work out the colours fairly easily.

    Tamiya paint/painting instructions

That’s righr but if I was you I would just buy a different brand of paint with the right colours.

Airbrush nozzle 0,2 or 0,4 mm for a beginner ?

I would also recommend the AS186. I used one for five years or so. A nice cheap reliable compressor great for anyone starting out.

Airbrush nozzle 0,2 or 0,4 mm for a beginner ?

The .2 nozzle can be more prone to clogging with model paint due to pigment size and thinning may not help much. The .4 needle will do you well. There are some model paints well suited to .2 such as MRP. My advice would be to use .4 until you have gained experience.

    Sprue goo?

I find that it is best to have several types at hand for different jobs. Most commonly I use Mr Dissolved Putty which has a tiny pigment dissolved in a lacquer type base and is very self levelling. This is good for treating seams or for any uneven surface. The carrier medium evaporates off...

    Acrylic Matte White Problems

    That’s fair enough Dave.

    Acrylic Matte White Problems

Vallejo, even Model Air, are not great with the .2 needle but Air should work OK with a .35. I would suggest using a light grey primer first and then spray the white, after the grey has cured, not just dried. You will need to fiddle around with retarder and possibly thinner to get it right...

How many Builds on the go at one time?

Interesting. I will only build one at a time and starting a new kit is the reward for finishing one. But then I do build primarily 1/32 scale aircraft which are inherently longer builds anyway. I agree about the burst of enthusiasm and, sometimes, it is possible to hit a ‘rough patch’ with a...

But, in my case, I am in a luxury cruise with Silver Seas, they are well known for the quality of the food Ian!

The Border Models 1/32 Lancaster BI/III

An update on progress. Over the last few weeks I have had a flare up of my back problem which has kept me off the bench. I have just done a few small bits but cannot sit for long because it aggravates the back. Also, my son, who is working on an expedition cruise ship, the Silver Wind, has...
