Hello folks - this is another current build that I am on with

I have been waiting a long time for a good T62 to appear and bought two of these as soon as it was released - unfortunately it is not as good as I was expecting

A bit of work is therefore required so here is a catch up to get to the current state......

t62-001_2018-3-18.jpg
Turret stippled with Squadron Green Stuff to get a bit of texture

t62-002_2018-3-18.jpg t62-004_2018-3-18.jpg
Front wheel arches cut away and track guards thinned right down

t62-003_2018-3-18.jpg
Engine deck grilles cut out, louvres installed from micro strip and mesh covers added

t62-005_2018-3-18.jpg t62-008_2018-3-18.jpg t62-006_2018-3-18.jpg t62-007_2018-3-18.jpg t62-009_2018-3-19.jpg
One of the worst features of the kit is the shortcut they have taken with the turret ring where it hangs out over the track guards
This should be a sloped casting from the hull, widening out at hull top level
It has been moulded as a solid lump with vertical sides rather than the more usual method of providing the sloping pieces as add on parts
I removed the moulded lump and rebuilt things with Green Stuff and plastic card to get the correct sloped sides
t62-010_2018-3-19.jpg t62-011_2018-3-19.jpg
Hull with turret after rebuilding the sides
t62-012_2018-3-19.jpg t62-013_2018-3-19.jpg
Gun barrel replaced with a scratch built item made from tubing and filler

t62-014_2018-3-20.jpg t62-015_2018-3-20.jpg t62-018_2018-3-26.jpg
The kit fuel drums are not great and lack detail so I scrapped them after cutting off the drum racks
New drum made from tube, brass wire, pewter and filler and strapped down to the recovered rack
For a bit of variety I left off the left drum and made up empty retaining straps from copper sheet

t62-017_2018-3-26.jpg t62-016_2018-3-26.jpg
Raised lip added around the turret ring from micro strip

t62-019_2018-3-26.jpg
Solid exhaust carefully opened out

t62-020_2018-3-31.jpg
Handrails added to turret from brass wire - nothing provided in the kit

I decided to open out the other grille at the rear left side - this would have been better to do earlier before the hull halves were joined

t62-022_2018-3-31.jpgt62-025_2018-4-1.jpg
Stowage box with added latches - first attempt was rubbish so they came off and were replaced

t62-023_2018-3-31.jpg
more handrails

t62-024_2018-4-1.jpg
mantlet cover sculpted from Duro Green Stuff

t62-026_2018-4-1.jpg
More handles

t62-028_2018-4-3.jpgt62-029_2018-4-3.jpgt62-030_2018-4-3.jpgt62-031_2018-4-3.jpgt62-032_2018-4-3.jpg
Fuel pipes added along with tank fixing brackets
t62-033_2018-4-8.jpgt62-034_2018-4-8.jpgt62-035_2018-4-8.jpgt62-036_2018-4-8.jpgt62-037_2018-4-8.jpgt62-038_2018-4-8.jpg
Details added to the front of the turret - light bracket thinned down and bolts added, lifting mechanism made from brass wire

t62-039_2018-4-9.jpg
Lenses added to the little marker lights next to the fuel tank

t62-040_2018-4-9.jpg
Hull front cleaned up and filled

t62-041_2018-4-9.jpg
Splash board added to glacis plate

t62-043_2018-4-11.jpg
I mucked up the cupola fixing ring and had to make a new version

t62-044_2018-4-11.jpg t62-045_2018-4-11.jpg t62-046_2018-4-11.jpg t62-051_2018-5-7.jpg
Extra details added to gun barrel and mantlet

t62-048_2018-5-7.jpg t62-050_2018-5-7.jpg
Random pictures of the back end again

t62-042_2018-4-9.jpg t62-049_2018-5-7.jpg
The one piece moulded track units could have been better. The track pins are rather vague so I added new ones from punched pewter sheet. Finished doing them today - takes a while

t62-047_2018-5-7.jpg t62-052_2018-5-7.jpg
So this is where I am up to now after adding the track pins and front and rear hull tow hooks
Still needs front lights, rear marker lights, fuel tank handles, storage box latches and one or two other small details

More done on this one today

t62-054_2018-5-8.jpg
Handles added to fuel tanks and marker light added to rear hull side

t62-055_2018-5-8.jpg
Bolt heads added to final drive housings and rear marker light added to hull side just above track guard

t62-053_2018-5-8.jpg t62-056_2018-5-8.jpg
Front mud guard torsion springs added
New conduits to lights from lead wire
Light cages added from brass wire

t62-057_2018-5-8.jpg
Un-ditching beam holder straps added to rear panel - bracket recovered by cutting off the kit 'log' and trimming down

I think this is now done and ready for paint but will give it the once over first to see if I have missed anything off

Morning Simon
What you do is way beyond what most of us would dare tackle. A great model. I still wonder why you bother to buy kits at all :tongue-out3: Paint next :thumb2:

Just caught up with this build Simon, and may I say what cracking work your doing, I don't think there isn't any part of the kit you haven't changed in any way ( and for the better ). This is one to keep on watching.

Thanks Neo - your friends 1/35 T62 is not scratch built (lost something in translation? ) but it is super detailed. Very nice

Hi Jim - it should have been better as a kit. They could have made a really good job of it if they tried. I bought two so I will get to do this all over again at some point

Ian - thank you very much. You're correct, not much that hasn't needed some work

I am glad you are continuing with this build. I expect you will be glad when you can finally get round to painting it

Unfortunately we don't have in Russian word like scratch, so I used it. Sorry for my mistake. I don't use traslaters because studied English for several years.

Steve - very nearly at paint stage. I need to add some turret lifting hooks and then I think it can move to paint

Hi Neo - no worries. I just had a different idea of what to expect when you said scratch build

Looks like you had some pent up T-62 modelling energy to uncage. Well done!

Hi Jim - I was annoyed at how bad the kit was and just sort of went for it :smiling:

Watching Simon's work over the years reminds me of a diamond cutter with a rough. He sees what could be, then makes it happen. PaulE

Hi Paul, thanks for dropping in

Have added the turret hooks now.

Also realised that I had forgotten the screw down latches on the stowage boxes - have added them to one box but still need to do another so still not quite at paint yet

Simon .

Of course the first thing I notice is the time of postings. You now seem to be waking up later at the table or embarking on very early starts.
That said it certainly doesn't comprise your work.

Marcello, Ross - thanks for dropping in

John - it's been getting worse. Waking up later and later - been getting to bed around 4am for a few days then it was 5am this morning!

I did however manage to get some more done on this before I passed out

I found a few more details that were missing

t62-058_2018-5-12.jpg
Each fuel tank needed an extra drain plug (?) adding to the end

t62-059_2018-5-12.jpg
Cupola got a brass wire handle to replace the solid plastic one and hinge pin ends added

t62-060_2018-5-12.jpg
Three lifting hooks added to the turret (just in front of the grab handle - same at the other side and one at the rear)
These were made from cut down and sanded Airwaves 1/35 etch equipment brackets

t62-061_2018-5-12.jpg
Front left stowage box lid fixings added

t62-062_2018-5-12.jpg
Hinge points added to the fender torsion bars and the fender lock bracket added made from an off cut of etch fret brass

t62-063_2018-5-12.jpg
Rear left stowage box lid fixings added

A sprinkling of rivet/bolt heads added and I think this is now complete and ready for some paint
