Hi all,

This is my completed Airfix 1/72 Douglas SBD 5 Dauntless - painted in the colours of the French Fighter group (Groupe de Chasse).

Build Summary

This kit is old. 1965 to be exact. The parts had loads of flash, sometimes in difficult locations to remove. It also had mostly raised rivet detail - which to my surprise is very good. The fit also to my surprise is also very good. There is filler required between the fuselage and the front part (covering the engine) to make it all look like one piece. Painting was not too difficult as it was a simple two tone scheme with no camo. The decals on this kit are phenomenal, they really make an average kit turn out to be very nice in my opinion. The canopy was painted using acrylics and kept separate from the rest of the kit, it was not matte coated as I painted it in separate steps and not one go so didnt really want to mask it off correctly and matte coat it, so I left that. It does look a little shinier than the kit itself, but I am happy with it.

The kit was painted with Tamiya enamles and Humbrol enamels. All in all another fun and very satisfying build.

I would like to iterate that this kit is built for pleasure and I am not at all concerned with accuracy, historical or technical (as long as it is built close enough to the instructions I was provided)

Excellent work Bob, you've produced a little gem there. Nice to see one in something other than US Navy markings.

That looks fantastic bob . I really like this. Im a sucker for older kits like this , they can still produce a great looking model as youve shown. Patricks right too , its a nice change to see the french markings too. Top work mate and i bet you really enjoyed this one too, cheers tony

Looks, great, Bob. You've done wonders with this ancient kit. Makes me want to build one myself - 50 years after I first build one!

Nice result. You are right about the decal sheet, even a rudimentary kit can be made into something rather attractive with a quality set of decals in the hands of a skilled modeller. But those rivets...I'm sure if you scaled them up they would give a Clyde ship's riveter the heebie jeebies!

Looks great, Bob. So often a french dauntless is not to be seen.
