Hi all this is my latest build. It is the Airfix 1/72 SBD 5 Dauntless

Build Plan

To build the kit OOB, with the back canopy removed so the guns are visible. This will be built into a French aircraft (SBD 5) that was located in southern France. It will be painted using enamels mostly. Weathering will be kept to a minimum. I would like to clarify that I am not an accuracy buff, so am not at all concerned about whether the aircraft had a small rudder a strange landing wheel or 6 bladed propeller... I want to build and paint it according to the instructions. I am concerned with how it builds up and how I paint it - meaning the modelling of the kit.

Overall Impressions of the kit

This kit is very old, the panel lines are mostly raised and there are raised rivets all over the kit, which might turn out to be great (and might not either). There is flash on almost every part and the cockpit is super simple. The instructions and the decals are very good and probably come out of the new Airfix way of doing things. I will see how this builds out.

I hope you all liked the post. All comments welcome.

One of things I dislike about Airfix; pop an ancient mould in a fancy new box & make it look like a new tool kit!

Having said that, I've been tempted by it when in Hobbycraft, so I'll watch with interest Bob.

Looking forward to seeing progress on this one Bob. Yes it's old, it has wart and all, but they can be made into rather nice finished products.

It will be nice to watch this old kit come to life.

I had a root around and found my build threads for this to read if you were interested, I didn't really have any problems putting it together.

Thanks Rick for the posts!

Thanks all for the comments, this has turned out to be a fantastic little kit. For its age it has built up very well.

Here is the latest update.

Super simple cockpit.

Here it is gloss coating and decaling begun.

Here it is nearly finished (appologies for the blurred photo). I have done an enamel wash on the kit using Tamiya Panel Line accent. I have also done up the weapons and landing gear.

Now the next post should be the last one.

The kit has gone together really well. With most of the detail being raised a wash didnt really help bring much detail out. The decals however really have brought this kit to life, they were very well done and made a big difference to the overall look of the kit.

Very satisfying build, and maybe in future I will do up a more refined kit and detailed kit of this aircraft.

Nice, neat work, Bob.

Ron
What a quick build. Looks nice.

Thanks Ron and Colin.

Here is the final update

So all parts have been put together, these are the pics before the matte coat is fully dry some glue is also drying in between the canopies. I used Alclad II Flat Coat to matte coat the model.
