Hi all.

I decided to have a bash at an old friend of mine from when I was a kid.

The 1/72nd scale Airfix Mk-IX Spitfire.

I remember it being my pride and joy when I was about 7 years old.

I believe it wasn't even painted and it's prop didn't rotate but I loved it.

Will have pics for this project when it's underway.

(God I don't remember the kit being this poor compared with the later airfix spits and other companies models LOL)

Hi Tiger. I built this rather average kit a few months back http://www.scale-models.co.uk/aircraft-pictures/15856-airfix-1-72-spitfire-ix.html

It was a great way to get back into the hobby but it was, as you say, a poor kit. Have fun with the landing gear and the general fit. You will make friends with putty and sandpaper for sure. And watch those propeller blades! I had two which fell off twice, once during construction and again during varnishing.

I have done a few test fits and it seems to fit quite well except for the overlap of the fuselage by about 1/2 to 1mm at some points .

I think it will be a job for my stanley blade to flush down the fit when its sides are together.

BTW nice progress, it doesn't look as though you have sanded too much detail off it. Almost ready for primer/paint?

Your right I was lucky not to have to do too much work with the sandpaper as I think my kit was a little better on the tolerances.

I must say you did a fine job on yours it looks sweet.

Hope mine ends up looking at least half as nice LOL

Job finished and I do wish it was a better molded spit.

was interesting seeing the old girl again in all its glory.View attachment 48880View attachment 48881

although its a horror I did enjoy this build.

I last built this kit as a child of about 7 and it was in blue plastic with it's wheels up I remember.

Had many a dogfight in my room and the memories flooded back.

God I'm sad.

Just a few extra decals and I wanted the gloss finish to reflect a museum piece

That turned out well Tiger, nice job done on a terrible kit. What's next then?

I'm not sure yet I think I need to see what takes my fancy.

maybe another blast from the past.

What was your first kit built to any standard.

Mine was an Airfix Messerschmitt Me BF109-G6 series 1

just built in it's blue plastic with the decals all put on in the wrong place, I remember my brother telling me I was daft.

Nice to have a blast from the past - old kits can be simply just fun.

My first kit was a Macchi Saetta, a Revell kit. I must have been 8 or 9, I painted it overall gloss green  Still got it somewhere along with its Hurricane adversary! They have had many battles over the years.
