Just a mention about a commercial product which goes under the name of masking fluid, this is a thin coloured latex which is ideal for masking off small areas, one word of warning whatever you do never use your best paintbrushes to apply the fluid,it will wreck them beyond cleaning.

Best to use one of those rubber tipped brushes once again obtainable from art stores.

You can in fact buy masking fluid from model shops as well,it dries out leaving a skin which is easily peeled away, very useful for awkward areas that need masking.

Another way that you can use it is to tack shelf paper onto your model a little away from the colour demarcation line, then flood the area slightly beyond that to merge with the paper, just rip the paper away and roll off the masking fluid with your finger when dry.
