Armor affects on halftrack

Hey guys, I’m relatively new at modeling. I’ve been doing WWII military models from tanks to soldiers. I’ve started to get the hang of things and decided i want to take it to the next level and make a small diorama. I just completed a US bazooka team and i have one of my first builds (a German halftrack) i want to use. So i have no knowledge of how to make weathering affects or damage on vehicles but I’d like to make the halftrack look as if it was hit by a bazooka round and is disabled. Any tips on how to do so would be amazing.
Thanks, Joe

Joe,
Glad you found us. Google is a good place to start. There is also a FB site that specialises in damaged vehicles could be worth a look.

Thankyou I’ll take a look. Another question. I’ve been seeing dioramas with like an explosion and smoke. I’d like to learn how to do that if anyone can give me some pointers

Joe glad you followed upon the recommendations from the MM forum to cross over too here, I'm pretty sure you'll find the answers to any of your questions from someone on the site. Good luck on the build. :thumb2:

Hi Joe,
Good to see you, the damage to the halftrack would depend on what type of halftrack it is, what it is carrying and where it is hit, as too explosions and smoke I'm sorry I can't help you.
regards Jim

This is the exact model i have. One of my first ones so it isn’t too pretty, as to why i want to put battle damage on it.

Hi Joe,
I am happy to be corrected but I believe yes a bazooka round coud immobilize it but the visible damage would be restricted to the point of impact but hey you don't need to get wrapped up in that as it's totally up to you to do as you see fit the main thing being you enjoy yourself and use the experience in your future buids

Sorry to bother you again lol, But personally how do you think i should do it? I do agree with the point of impact statement but I’m not really sure what to do

Hi Joe,
You said in an earlier post that the model isn't too pretty so I presume that you want to hide something, personally I wouldn't go down the damaged route because I find it harder to get a realistic result, the Sd.Kfz 251/1 was utilised in all areas of conflict and there are many photo's of them with equipment hanging on the sides even jerry cans were hung outside the vehicle on the sides, another option would be camoflage the vehicle with foliage, and another option is a strategically placed tarpaulin but as I mentioned previously its totally up to you as long as you enjoy yourself it doesn't matter
regards Jim

Hi Joe,
Last ideas for tonight is good old fashioned Mud dependent on where the area is you want to hide you could have it bogged down or you could have it a building covered in rubble, the possibilities are out there you will just need to decide what you are happy doing. I hope that's some help.
goodnight Jim

Hi Joe,

Great tips from the guys for steering away from impact hits and explosions as they are the hardest things to achieve in a dio. I've seen some pretty good ones in images but having seen them for real up close just doesn't have the same effect. I am struggling with one myself.
If you
re still wanting to show bazzoka damage and if I were you I'd do a pre-ambush or an aftermath with the bazooka team next to a blacken smoldering heap of a halftrack. This is doable with a burnt out exposed engine compartment, tyres with only the rims with white ash for the burnt rubber. The impact since the bazooka round is a high explosive anti tank (HEAT) warhead will make a neat hole so drill out that part and slightly melt the edges. Seriously doing burnt out hulks is an art of its own and will need many tries to get it right. Just remember that the next build will be better through gaining knowledge and practise.
Share with us some pictures of what you've done so far.

Cheers,
Richard

Hi Joe,

I tried to simulate a knocked out vehicle you could try something similar. I have attached a pic for you to have a look and hopefully it might give you some ideas.

Thank you for the advice. I think I'm gonna go with the aftermath like you said. As soon as I start on it I'll be sure to send pictures

I like this a lot. Thankyou for the picture..it lets me visualize what I want to do. I think overall I'll incorporate that with some kind of bazooka damage above the wheel around the engine. When I start working on it I'll send some picture so you can see how it's coming along

Always a great favorite of mine showing a battled damaged vehicle. Check out Google using that title and WW2 .
Of course you you could resort to FIRE ! See my attached photo!

The Bazooka fired a HEAT (high-explosive, anti-tank) round, and when those hit armour plate they tend to leave just a small hole — as in the thickness of a finger or so — with scorch marks around it. Take a look at this Tiger II:

target-practice.jpg

The small holes in the front plate, between the big ones, are probably from Bazooka hits (the big ones look like 75–76 mm rounds to me).

On a lightly armoured vehicle like an Sd.Kfz. 251, it wouldn’t be much different, though a hit near the wheel would probably also rip off the mudguard, or at least seriously bend it out of shape, as that was only sheet steel and a Bazooka round explodes when it hits something. It is likely to start a fire as well, given that a side-on hit near the wheel probably goes into the engine, may damage fuel lines, etc. Fires on models, though, are most easily represented by painting the model as having rusted in the whole area affected by the fire. If rubber tyres are in a fire, they disintegrate into a whitish powder, so the 251 would probably have a bare wheel rim on at least one side, and may have sagged through it suspension on that side too because fire weakens springs.

Very useful information, thankyou...I'll be sure to take all of that into practice as I'm working on it
