Battle Damage on Spacecraft

So, I recently bought a few Battlestar Galactica model kits (Raider, Viper Mk II, and the BSG itself), and have questions regarding battledamage. I want my kits to look weathered and beaten, mainly with the use of drybrushing and washes. My main question, I guess is how to paint a laser burn effect, or carbon scoring. Any suggestions?

I used to do this many moons ago!

For the laser burn I would use a soldering iron. This also works for small blast holes.

Then paint black around the damaged area.

Oh, and welcome!

Hi Gabesauce and welcome to the Scale Models forum. We have had a few Sci-Fi models on here in the past so hopefully there will be something of interest to you amongst the posts.

As for damage, another suggestion is to thin the plastic down from the back with either a grinder, Dremel or sandpaper, then spray it silver on the inside. Fuinally stab it from the outside with a sharp craft knife and twist the knife to open up the hole. This will give you a much thinner edge to the damage which will appear like a realistic spacecraft metal skin.
