I'm not sure what I'm letting myself in for here, but, gloss is a reflective finish, matt, doesn't reflect.

Ok thankyou very much Colin, I thought this maybe the case but of course, as a newbie, I wanted to check!

Well put Colin. I would of said gloss is shiny, matt is not. If you need some thing in between then you want satin.

Dead easy Tristan try a bit of each on painted plastic and as Ian has suggested Satin.

You can then assess the won that suits for the project.

Beware though Tristan. I've had much hassle with this when trying to get a gloss finish using varnish. I have found that it's better to stick with matt or flat paint and then apply a gloss varnish, if a gloss finish is what is required. For some reason, unknown to me, the gloss varnish gives a better gloss on flatt/matt than on gloss paint.
