large scratch built Romulan war bird

Hello everyone,
one of my friends requested that I build him a romulan war bird and here she is, it was quite a hard build due to the shape and the fact the the Romulan war counsel would not release any details of the craft, I sent an e mail to the high command on romulas but had no reply from them at all. I had no option but to go it alone using a small drawing from the good old internet I managed to get a good likeness ( I think so ) but with little reference it was down to artistic license but my friend is happy with the result. Please let me know what you think as this will help with my model making in the future.

regards Barrie ( the old guy )

Hi Barrie
Very impressed with that. What materials did you use? Also what size is it? I am not at all surprised that your friend was pleased.

Really nice job Barrie, the old kit from AMT (I think) is a challenge to build not even considering the scratch building way to make one.:thumb2:
Like Jim I'm interested to know the size and materials used.

Thank you all for your nice comments,
first of the size the war bird is 36 inches long 26 inches wide and 10 inches deep, not the biggest model I have made as some of you know ( Tony ) but a good size. As for materials well nothing fancy at all sheet plastic mostly 40 thou thick some 60s was used for the frame work as I was always told build them strong. there are a few added bits fro my vast spares box here are a few more build pics to show how it was done, sharing my hobby is the best part of it and I hope that it will inspire some one out there to have a go at a model,

regards Barrie the old guy

Hello Guy and Simon,
the only drawing I worked of was a small A4 sized sheet of a drawing which I got from yes you guessed the good old internet, then I just scaled it up and did my own rough drawing to give me an idea of size, then got more reference from the net and commenced building, I must admit the first nose on the model was far to big so I had to chop down. As you can see I photo as much as the build as possible as this helps when you look at it on screen it can look well or horrible this is also true when painting as the camera flash and pixel depth help to picj areas that have not been covered, but which to your own eye looks OK. Most of my large scale models have been made doing the same thing only on the odd occasion have I been able to source really good drawings from which to work. I hope this helps you both and if there is anything else I can help with let me know.

regards Barrie ( the old guy ) thanks for the nice comments about the model boys. the attached file shows A 4 sized print fro the net and the scaled up plastic shapes which went on to make the derelict ship fro the film Alien, a model which I sold to a collector.

36" - impressive! That's a good chunk of plastic card

I've long fancied scratching a large scale Eagle, AT-ST or AT-AT but still haven't got around to it  One day, maybe....

Hello Simon,
well all I can say is give it go here as they say is one I built a long time ago ( 8 years ) I just wanted to have a go and ended up selling this to a collector, just have a try it may not work out I often have to scrap and start again or hack bits of to make sure it looks right when building a model,

That is one impressive build Barrie. Really like the eagle too, one of my all time favourite scifi craft along with Thunderbird 2 and Fireball XL5
