The biggest issue I have is that the umbilical cable is a bit big - this is due to having a support wire as well as the two power wires. Any ideas how I can make this thinner?

If it's not too heavy I would try a piece of hinge pin or what we yanks call piano wire. About .030 dia.;)

That sounds like what I'm using - the wire used is just ofer 1/2 mm which is close to 0.30. iI've tried some thinner wire from the garden (the type use for tying plants, and it is not strong enough.

If you are using piano wire, you won't easily be able to bend it without exerting considerable force....an easy test to perform before going to the trouble of trying it on the model.
