Gorham's Rangers it is.
Really set the pattern for subsequent Ranger companies and initially composed of native american/Canadians with Colonial officers. Uniform details are sketchy but one trick they had was wearing reversible coats worn according to local conditions.

Seems like anything went as far as uniform goes. Frock coats, Native American leggings and shoes etc. Very interesting.

one of the things about the Russian army in the Crimea is how they often resemble European troops of a later time - to me at least.
this is a young Tolstoy who served with the artillery during the siege of Sebastopol,subsequently gaining a promotion to lieutenant.

Edit. What I took to be a death's head on the buttons is actually the imperial Russian double-headed eagle.
