It’s the Motor Scout, developed by Frederick Richard Simms in 1899, most likely the world’s first armed vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine.

(I recognised it immediately, but had to look up the name, which entailed removing about 10 cm worth of books and an almost as thick layer of dust to get at my copy of The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Military Vehicles by Ian V. Hogg and John Weeks, 1980, which I was 100% sure had that same photo of it — on pages 6–7, to be precise, where it’s captioned as the “Quadricycle Maxim Gun Carrier” being demonstrated at Roehampton in 1898.)

No, it’s an entirely different vehicle. Newer, for one.

Looks to be a horizontally opposed eight cylinder, possibly diesel. Standard shift might be a hint to post war period before automatics became prevalent. PaulE

It’s a petrol (gasoline) engine, but otherwise you’re spot on. The way they’re having to remove it from the vehicle might be a clue to its type, by the way.

I’ll give another clue, then, shall I? The vehicle is of a pretty large family of related ones. Just name the basic one the others derive from, as it was much the same for that as for the variant from whose tech manual this photo was lifted.

Same engine as a Saracen, so not it either.
