Who designed this, what class is it, and what link does the class have to Salisbury?

London and South Western Railway, F13 Class loco. Designed to run on the Salisbury to Exeter route, but only did so for a year. Designed by Dugald Drummond.

Right designer, right line, wrong engine (and wheel arrangement) and no Salisbury link....
By the way, F13s were paddlebox 4-6-0s. These are earlier....

Nearly Rick, pretty close, but not an S11....find the Salisbury link and you’ll get the engine class.....

I also came up with the S11.
So is it the T9 class 4-4-0 from which the S11 was developed.
The Salisbury connection being their greater ability to handle the tighter curves of the Southern line west of Salisbury. Close quotation marks.

John mate, the tighter corner thing is actually the opposite of what happened....Salisbury and corners are key to this one....
For info, S11s were built a year before this one, and T9 greyhounds (best looking engines ever!) a few years before. S11s had six inch smaller wheels and had slightly smaller boilers as another hint.

Tim.
It must therefore be the L12 class locomotive. One of them involved in the Salisbury rail crash in 1906, taking the curve at more than twice the proscribed max. speed.28 killed.

Spot on. The accident closed the rivalry between the GWR and The LSWR for the lucrative trans Atlantic passenger traffic. The L12 loco had a higher center of gravity than the usual T9 class so leaned into the curve more when cornering, hitting a Jubilee 0-4-2 on a milk train and derailing. 24 of the 43 passengers were killed and 4 railwaymen. 7 further passengers were seriously injured as were a further 3 railwaymen. As a result, all passenger trains have stopped at Salisbury ever since.
Engine looks great in photographic grey though doesn’t it....
Your go Jon.....
