It’s not a smoke generator, nor an NBC or decontamination vehicle.

This is a photo from a technical manual, so it shows the complete vehicle.

Could this be a water purification unit on an M548?
I don’t think you’d want to drink what’s supposed to be stored in the tanks.

Airplane deicer?
It could help with deicing planes, but again, I don’t think you’d want it to.

Rocket fuel mixer?
You’re getting warmer …

There appears to be a chap in the forward machine gun ring wearing protective or snow camouflage clothing. Is that relevant?
Jon.

I recon Lee is getting close, the tank and mixer would be ideal for solids disposal, dose the tank, add chemical, mix, pump away....we used to use a similar arrangement to get rid of rejected cell slurry at work...and I bet the smell was similar....
I thought the “guy” in white was actually the MG cover

As the others have already said, that’s just the machine gun in its canvas cover.

So are we looking at an armoured/tracked bog servicing vehicle?
No, we’re not, but that question reminds me of <clue>the scene in Platoon where they’re on latrine duty.</clue>

So you noticed it’s armoured, then? Since nobody else seems to have, IIRC …

Little-known fact: the Americans in the 1960s were so short of petrol because of sticking big V8 engines in everything from pickup trucks to Corvettes to pimpmobiles to wheelbarrows, that they needed to convert military transports to having gas generators.

So the big tank is a biomass digester producing methane? To be honest it doesn’t look right if it is. I would expect a pressure tank with insulation to keep the heat in and promote the digestive fermentation process? Unless....it is the collector truck that collects and supplies slurry to a static generator system where the methane is generated and distributed? If so though, why armoured? A basic truck would do the job just as well...good teaser this, we need Peter “two brains” Day to help out I think....
Cheers
Tim

You’re not all taking this post:

literally, are you? It was meant as a joke, which I thought would be obvious, but now I’m having some doubts :smiling3:

Let’s try to get you all back on track … It’s a transport vehicle. It has some kind of tanks and stuff in the back. It has armour plating. So what reasons could there be to protect a liquid and/or the machinery associated with the tanks it’s kept in, with armour?

(If I’m honest I hadn’t expected this one to be so difficult. Then again, my view on that may be skewed because I’ve aware of this vehicle’s existence since almost 30 years ago, when I bought what I still think is one of the best ever AFV books — though I’ll not mention the title yet because then it’ll be too easy by just looking at pictures.)

Ok, so I'm now looking at it in a different light, would it have anything to do with Vietnam? Armoured because it contains orange agent Or some sort of vegetation killer?
