So occasionally my 70yr old neighbour who got me into modelling after I saw his extensive collection of 200+ tanks and military aircraft, ask me the 4 month in newbie to paint up some of his figures for his larger scale tanks due to his eyes and hands not being what they use to.... And I obviously love the challenge and feel privileged that I'm being asked, since im the one who aspires to have his modelling skills which are amazing as are his diorama building skills. Here are the completed tank crew men I have just finished for him in between completing my Panther tank.

Some great work there Jamie, the only advice I would give you (my figure painting isn't great) would be to try and narrow the eyes, they all look surprised with their eyes being so wide. I'm sure some of our more skilled exponents of the art will be able to advise how.

My figures aren't brill either but I'd say you've got a very good base there for shading and highlighting. One thing you could try is a simple wash of a darker colour which will pick out detail and give some depth to the clothing.
As for the faces have you heard of "the Verlinden Way"? It's a very simple method of painting over the flesh base with an oil mix and then removing most of the mix with a brush. This leaves colour in the shadow areas and creates highlights too.
Jon.
