DKM Scharnhorst 1943 - 1/350 Dragon Kit + extras

This is my next project after I have a break from my KGV. First photo shows the thickness of the Box compared to the KGV which gives a clue to the models complexity.

The basic kit contains 1,300 parts, which comes in 14 Plastic bags containing 29 plastic sprues + Hull + bag with 5 PE sheets + stand.

Have added aftermarket MK1 wooden deck and MK1 enhancements containing 3 PE sheets + wooden decks for ships boats.

As before will be using Lifecolor paint set and for the WW2 Kriegsmarine.

Thanks Ian, I am seriously running out of storage space. I have a 1/350 Type VIIB U-Boat which I was going to make the 'Golden Horseshoe' U-99 berthed alongside the Scharnhorst in an icy water Dio. I know it didn't happen, but I thought it would make a nice Dio, storage space is the problem. I have plenty of time to think about it. Derek

Derek, there is a famous photo of Scharnhorst 'saluting' Gunther Prien's U47 returning to port after his epic attack on Scapa Flow.


So who's to say, before his capture in 1941, our mate Otto didn't at some time berth alongside Scharnhorst for a few drinky poos during the early stages of WW2?


It would be a brave man to state it didn't happen....In any case who cares, it will make a great diorama.

Thanks Ron, The only 'contact' U-99 had with Scharnhorst that I have found so far is when Scharnhorst's Aircraft mistook it for a British Submarine and attacked it damaging it sufficiently for it to return to port for repairs.

HELP PLEASE


Was trawling the internet doing my research on this vessel, and saw a model of the Scharnhorst with the Turret tops painted Red. Did some more research and found that two German Destroyers had been accidentally sunk by the Luftwaffe; following these incidents it became standard procedure for Capital Ships to paint their Turret Tops either Red or Yellow when the vessels entered waters patrolled by the Luftwaffe in order to prevent a repeat. I am guessing that the Swastikas fitted on the Fore and Aft decks were also part of this temporary identification procedure.


Question: - Can anyone confirm that the Swastikas were only present when the Turrets were painted Red/Yellow. I am pretty sure they were, can't think the Germans would provide 'bulls eyes' for the RAF/Fleet Air Arms.

Just had a scan on Google Images. It would seem she had various colour schemes. What year were you thinking of modelling her on Derek? That will narrow the search a bit.....

Hi Ron, I think it applied to all ships of any colour scheme, the red/yellow turret tops, and I think, the deck swasticas were only painted temporarily whilst the vessels were within Luftwaffe range. The procedure came in after the two German Destroyers were sunk by the Luftwaffe, don't know which year this happened.


Only reason I raised it is the Kit comes with the deck swastikas, but the paint scheme makes no mention of the turret tops. Thanks for your help Ron. Derek

The Kit and upgrade PE set was a Christmas present, I bought the Wooden Deck. I would guess it was less than £200 approx. the Dragon kit is getting harder to find now, but still possible to find

That's bonkers, It looks like some of those diddy people on her turret are actually saluting! Amazing stuff and thanks for sharing.

Made a start with the 2cm Flak Guns, I don't think Dragon have done a particularly good job of them, the Barrel seems too large a diameter and too short. They also instruct you to cement it onto the Pedestal directly instead of the Barrel fitting to the Yoke which is then cemented to the Pedestal. Anyway have tried to make the best of a bad job, so the photo below is my compromise. The Gun Sight and Shoulder rest have been taken from spares from my KGV build, these were Gold Medal Models PE. 9 more to go. Derek
