Heres one im going to be doing alongside the su22 as its not going to be a long job. Its a newish ( 2010 ) tooling ,not as detailed inside as the new airfix offerings but nicely rendered outside with recessed panel lines and nice fabric effects. Im going to be doing the HMS Nairana white / sky scheme . This scheme requires a bit of surgery , cutting out the section in front of the tail wheel and replacing with a tailhook piece . Im also going to put in the pilot and keep the canopy closed .7D2A0077-8EB4-405E-8BDB-36341A2A0F60.jpeg0AA2FE5C-CEA3-4451-8F4C-0DCBD08EBD9F.jpegE812131E-5A47-414A-AB1E-AC4C12E730D0.jpeg8CC5AFCF-D59F-46B1-9DF2-4418F22DF216.jpeg1BA0CC14-CED3-4420-912D-2C46400464EB.jpegE2DBA2CB-E43C-42DE-AF54-6CB64903BB27.jpeg1DA68392-E5AC-41C3-A174-B01B8181A9C4.jpeg3720D694-F582-4901-90CF-E21B323A603B.jpeg

I do like these newish/new 1/72 Airfix kits. Maybe not the absolute crème de le crème but for their price they build into nice little kits.

Hi Tony
I agree with Andrew that these kits do build up nicely. I actually have the Airfix Focke-wulf Fw-190A-8 on the bench which is a good little kit. I Iike your idea of a carrier based aircraft, something a bit different.

Yo Mucker!

I do like these great little Airfix kits and at £4.99 for the so called 'Starter Kits', I like them even better! The Hurricane offering is one cracking kit.

I am looking forward to your build.

I built one of these seven years ago and I agree it is a nice little kit:

Got the section for the tailhook cut out . I cut the front and back with the razor saw then used the Olfa P cutter to cut the inner line by repeatedly scribing it till it was just about through. The piece was then bent in a bit so it showed a white line where the plastic was thinnest ,which i cut from the outside with the scalpel . Ive painted the cockpit parts ( all four of them !) and used the decal for the instrument panel. I painted a rough representation of the cockpit sides on the fuselage halves which will be fine once its all closed up and the mester is in his seat .
Speaking of which , does anyone know what colour a FAA pilots flying dress would have been ? Ive seen B&W photos of pilots wearing what looks like an all over light coloured ( khaki?) immersion type suit , but then again ive seen pics of pilots in the dark navy blue uniform too . 222A960D-0C23-4D6E-9E3B-9DCA5FB17381.jpeg01439B85-294A-4F69-9647-7FFB52A0E924.jpeg55EB2F6C-BC96-4E86-8A81-D72DC8FBD7CA.jpeg51BC2F98-1AB3-4A5E-985B-4AFA21FB5D3A.jpeg6178247E-7450-492C-BD35-CBE7DCA4AB3E.jpegFC579913-6664-4AD0-BE70-3CD159733D14.jpeg6BEE3349-FABB-4FC9-BE2F-D43B1BD610AC.jpeg

I havent gone mad with the cockpit detail as its having a closed canopy but theres one prominent thing missing from the kit - the reflector gunsight . This will be plainly visible ( or notable by its absence ) so the spares box was visited and turned up a nice gunsight . Dont know what kit it came from but its about the right shape so in it went . That faithfull old stalwart the Airfix pilot figure ( he must have flown just about every type of aircraft in his long career !) has been painted up and stuck in his seat . I added some painted strips of tape for his harness . Now hes safely strapped in the bottom wing has been attached to the fuselage and left to set . Next up the top wings and cannons . 8B90B2AC-9272-431A-A2B0-CBF8ED22F1EC.jpegA62AB2CF-4744-4ADA-8263-2DA70521704E.jpeg3AFA4C5D-F321-4AC2-9637-6AC169546F3A.jpeg55BD56BB-ED10-4323-9651-9E5EEA8122A4.jpeg1E0AD459-F9C6-4C25-B45A-580DCBA9AA84.jpeg

Hi Tony. Office and pilot look great. As you say, once the canopy is on not a great deal will be seen but you’ll know it’s there. The harness looks particularly effective.

Going back to the arrester hook. Is the cutting of the fuselage in the instructions for this kit? I’ve built the new tool straight mk1 in 1/72 (I think this kit is based on). Is the surgery needed because this kit is the mk1 with new parts and requires modification?
Thanks
Paul

Yes the tailhook section and tailhook are extra parts included in the kit , the instructions show you where to cut and the fuselage is thinner where the cut needs to be ( see the pic in the earlier post ) . There are three decal options , only this one needs the tailhook , the other two are straight mkIIc s

Gotcha. Should have picked that up quicker. Bit of a senior moment. Couldn’t work out if the mod was of your making or a requirement of the kit!
