Unsure as to put this in dioramas or Aviation Modelling ! So stuck it here because its really about the Fighter.

Last year a friend of mine who's called Dom asked me if i could build him a BF110 in the codes that shot down his great Uncle's P/O Cyril T Anderson. Avro Lancaster EA * D. ED702 of 49 Squadron, so i said yes which turned out to be a right old headache but after doing several net searches about this type of fighter and with the help of Dom contacting Luftwaffe specialists over the water we where able to build the correct looking aircraft, The kit itsself is an Eduard 1/48th kit and is supposed to be the queen of kits but is full of faults Halfway through the build of this model my friend decided that a diorama would look nice to set the model, so the build got even more complicated as we had to source German figures/tools and equipment. The diorama base is actually a picture frame which makes them ideal for dio' bases and the inner edge of the frame has a recess in which the clear perspex cover was fitted over to finish the job off.

The night fighter is depicted as BF 110 CE *G9 and was piloted by Lt Hienz Grimm who was shot down by German

AA fire and was seriously injured when he bailed out and died later in hospital.

The diorama itself makes a very interesting insight as can be seen so have a look what can be seen and who's chilling out and who working hard to keep this bird flying.

Sorry for having so many pictures !

Cheers.

To stop any dust on the model we decided to get a cover made and the cheapest way was to have some

custom made clear acrylic sections and then make them up myself, but this was a little harder than i thought

because the company we used for cutting and finishing the plastic was useless and it took them two attempts

to get it right, then the second isn't brilliant but after polishing the plastic myself and gluing it all together looks

rather well now and should keep dust at bay.

Thanks for looking Guys.

Ian.

A truly beautiful model and superbly finished off.

Not only are the elements superbly crafted but it is a piece that would look good on anyone's shelf. Your friend must be chuffed to bits!

Congrats Ian

That's a lovely model and a great diorama and not a Lancaster in sight.

On a historical note was ED 702 Grimm's claim for the night of 23-24 May 1943? It's always good to put names to the numbers, even in my chaotic files.

Cheers

What a superb model and shown off beautifully in the diorama setting. I particularly like the cockpit with the canopy all opened up to show it off. Great detailing and very nicely finished and gently weathered.

It made me think as well, always a plus point with a model, just how similar the setting is to an RAF dispersal of the same time and a great reminder of just how alike we actually were.

Remembering back I think I can remember these faults but could be a few more as well.

The main wheels are incorrect.

Nacelles do not fit onto wings, too big.

Nacelles fit lower than the wings, causing a bad step and had to add plasticard to fill the gaps.

Nacelles would not go together because of warping of the plastic.

No access ladder.

Undercarriage would not fit into wheel bay, so i had to chop thin down undercarriage supports.

Undercarriage legs set at wrong angle.

One main wing was wider than the other wing and looked bad against the fuselage, so had to even out the wing width.

No rear tail lights.

Pilots seat incorrect.

When I built up the interior it would not fit into the fuselage halves.

Cheers.

Ian.

That's just exquisiteI've more or less given up building aircraft purely because I can never get this high standard finish, I just get great satisfaction now from looking at the expert results of others, such as this

A wonderful diorama, superb looking BF110, really outstanding.

The figures are well positioned except for the guy sitting in a chair with his arms in the air.

In my eyes that is the only thing that are keeping this great diorama from getting top points.

But once again, regardless of the one figure it is a truly great diorama!

a refreshing change for me to see a build like this. Very meticulous and especially in the glazing which is my bane. I for one would not wnat to service any aircraft like this in the dead of winter. Top shelf.
