I have used plaster for concrete and used wet and dry for racing track to display bikes on in the past. I would use a thin layer of plaster and scribe a line across it before it sets to create a joint. This will then take a wash nicely and make a realistic joint.

I will experiment of course, but what would you recommend for concrete in 1/72? Plaster perhaps, finished to scale-sized roughness?I have read that "wet and dry" at the correct grit size can look like tarmac.

I have some 1x1 square dense foam squares I got form a craft shop, they are ideal as concrete slabs in 1/72, easy to cut, then you just prime and paint.
