Edge highlights do really make the elements stand out. Must admit I thought the yellow was cloth, but I wouldn’t know how to make it look differently myself apart from a slight sheen….
I think I'm using edge highlighting less at this larger scale, than I did at 32mm scale. I sometimes wonder whether I've suppressed it too much.

I know what you mean…..trouble is, when it’s right it’s right, and when it isn’t, you have to repaint the area…..

I'm struggling with pale skin tones on this next figure. I used some old, part-dried paint on the face (why?! I was asking myself almost as I used it - one of those mistakes you know you're making, but can't help yourself for some reason) and that has ruined the smooth finish there - it'll now be much harder to get smooth colour transitions on her face as a result.

But her hair has been a breeze.

Loving the hair, that’s a great combination of colours. .

Unfortunately I think the skin needs localised stripping and redoing though. The lumps give her the appearance of a smallpox survivor. You should be able to do this with an old brush dampened with airbrush cleaner. Take it slow and only use a damp brush and you may just even out the surface without removing too much paint.

Thanks for the advice, Tim. Will that remove the acrylic paint without disturbing the lacquer primer?

To be honest, possibly not, depends how patient you are and how light your touch is. It will be more controllable than a full paint strip though. If it’s only a patch repair you don’t really need to reprime the area. It’s not as if it’s going to get heavy handling after all…..

So, after a LOT of umming and ahhing, I finally stripped off her face, using care and airbrush cleaner, as per @Tim Marlow - and of course, it worked an absolute treat. Great tip, Tim - I do love this forum!

In the meantime, I worked on her hair, skirt, beads and bodice. Her face is stripped back to lacquer primer, rubbed bare in one or two places.

That’s looking excellent Paul. Almost a Flintstone vibe about her. I particularly like the colouration on the breechclout. Great shadow work.

Working up nicely. Great skin tones as always. Always confuses me when people paint eyes last though, probably because I have always done them first ;)

I nearly always do eyes first too, Tim! I've been all over the place with this figure - outside-in on lots of it, and I'm going to have to do loads of touching up, I've badly rubbed paint off and sloshed paint over finished bits. Inside-outwards is definitely the way to go!

Been there Paul…..it’s always the feet…..It’s why I always use paint stands and tend to paint top down on the bigger stuff. I did try wrapping the lower parts in clingfilm once. Seemed a great idea until I unwrapped it and pulled most of the paint off :sleeping2: Not doing that again…….

OK, so this has been a real struggle. Lots of issues with priming, lots more issues with skin tones - and I'm still not wholly satisfied with the end result. However, I'm hoping that the flaws are more obvious to me than other viewers, and that once she's in the finished diorama even I might be able to overlook them!

Anyhow, let me know what you think - I'm now moving on to building the diorama itself. I'll start another thread for that in the appropriate section, once I've made a bit of progress.
