Good evening from Race Towers.
A better but cold day I spent much of yesterday putting those Friul tracks together. The drilling out part was fun, only drilled my finger once and that was enough not to do it again :flushed:.

Started to put them together, decided to use the double sided tape method, all well and good, but you can imagine the fun with having limited depth of field. Getting the wire into the hole was fun looking back, no wonder it took me a total of 5 hrs just to put 3/4 of the track together. Twice when I did a fit it came apart:tears-of-joy: where I had missed fitting a wire pin. Several times I actually went into the foam off cut which was supporting the tape, :smiling::smiling: Oh well one is nearly done so the next should take less time. :nerd::flushed::anguished:

Cut the wires before fitting, then realised there wouldn't be enough wire, thanks to a guy on U tube who just cut great oversized lengths. I had to use some thin wire on a couple of the first run so as not to run out. nSo now I fit the wire, then cut to size. every now and again I notice I'd gone straight through the link, ....... well that makes it easier for me, at least I know its in.:smiling3:

Fitted the rear wheel , just like a road wheel , very strange to me , but with that glued on I was able to gauge the length. The Friul front sprocket needed some cleaning up ,,,, and the locating hole on the body enlarging. CA here I suppose.

It was a this point I noticed I had a road wheel missing. I was really careful I thought to put all the wheels into a plastic cup. There is going to be a complete search of the work bench and floor tomorrow and a report made to Kremlin !!!
At The same time I noticed I had a suspension arm missing as well. Now these were all fitted, so somewhere on the bench as the model has not been anywhere else. With out more ado I scratched one from a piece of sprue, cut to length and sanded flat on the rear to give a better surface area it was glued on. The centre hole enlarged to take the over sized pin.

I give you a nearly completed track, but well worth the effort._MG_4148.JPG

John,

I have used those tracks a few times and your right drilling the fingers is not fun I found the easiest way was to set the drill in the holder so when It bottoms out it goes in deep enough but doesn't come out the other side. But they are worth the effort in the end.

Small report.
Give me foam board any day.!
After several hrs the second set is nearly completed. Having attempted to get the correct length on the first track several times only to have the odd link come apart at the stopped end.
This resulted in sg debonder being applied, after a lot of muttering the pin would come out. I then had to re drill the links and this time go through the end. Its the only way to ensure that the wire is in !
These tracks are really small, compared to a KV or Tiger.
I did manage to join the first set eventually, but in the process knocked half the pe brkts for the towing cable off. Where they have gone is anyone's guess.
I have decided to get the second sets to the length of the first, get them cleaned up on the wire ends then painted. In the final fit I'm not going to try to join them together, but glue the tracks to the bottom of the road wheels and have the join under a wheel. This way the sag can look right and any rubble hide the join.
Make some new brkts from spare pe
Annoyed that I can't see the bloody holes to line them up, let alone get the wire in while trying to hold it all together. Not often I have to admit defeat !
Annoyed :disappointed: of Linc's.

blah, I'm popping in way too few times. I missed too much :tired:

Mr. Race, what a fantabulastic build you got going on here chap. Really love how this one is going. And one gotta love Friul tracks. They are quite challenging in the beginning but after a while you get the hang of it. It's one of those things which I always instantly replacy by AM stuff. Couldn't do without those metal trackies anymore :D
Working with etch can be pain staking, we all know how it feels. Keep at it though chap, you will prevail!

Keep it up Sir!

Hi John
Glad you have sorted a way to use the tracks. Never used Friuls myself but having read about your experiences I may not bother!

Thanks Wouter....... The bigger sets might be easier , but as you've said its a matter of getting used to them.

John.

Thank Paul....... well you know me, don't like to be beaten , but I think the method I mentioned should get me through.

Thats is kind of you to say mate..........matches..... no not even for this one :hugging-face:It will fit one way or the other .

Jim....... I don't think you would have any trouble, my problem is the depth of field or lack of it :smiling4: , that's all .

This morning I finished the lengths and a carried out few redrilling of the odd faulty pin. All done now, in the end I wound each track up into a roll and reglued every hole. Just to make sure. Left now until I start to paint. Must remember to do a metal primer.
Carried on with the building on the other blog.

Thank for the support.
John .

One small tip which I found out: in the past I noticed that many people glued the retaining pins on the Friul tracklinks. But actually I think that's not really necessary. Never had issues with pins coming out again when handling the tracks.

Looking forward to see the next update chap.

Cheers

Hi John, Fruil is the only AM that I have not tried but will some day. Can't seem to fork out mullahs for something that I will glue down, bury in muck and dirt, however, the droop and hang might just win me over.

Cheers,
Richard

Hello John,
See you are having fun with the tracks, I break mine down into groups of ten. So it goes like this, build ten - sip - build ten - sip ...... and at the end of a length, you feel no pain and are glowing.....
Did you find the lost wheel?
Cheers, Mike.

Ahhhh! The joys of friul tracks. Everyone has there own way of doing things. One thing I like to do is once the glue has hardened and the pins are cut to length. I then sand the ends down into a dome to look like the end of a real track pin
