Revell 1/72 Avro Shackleton AWE2

I thought I would start my own thread as I don't want to take over Colin's, so here we go.


I have just recieved my model through the post this morning. A quick look in the box to see that all was there. All the sprues look ok only one of the props was adrift in the bag. The front section of the fuselage, they come in two parts maybe a different mk will be released in time, has what appears to be an oil mark which doesn't come off with airbrush cleaner, maybe it's part of the release agent. I also had a look at the clear parts knowing that Colin has issues with his. Guess what I have similar problems although not as bad, the top section of the main canopy has parts that you can just about see through and others have what appears to be stress marks, they might improve if dipped in Klear. Obviously there's some major issues with these canopies I have already been in contact with the model shop and I'm awaiting a reply. It's a bit disappointing concidering it's only just been released last month. The glazing on the BF109 I built was perfect so I don't know why Revell have got it wrong this time. Not sure when I'm going to start this one as I've still got to finish the Dauntless which is way over due started it in 2014:oops:. Here's a few shots of the offending parts.

That's a shame about the glazing and the fuselage side too. Hoping it's easily removed as there's ally of panneling abd rivoting going on in Egan I can see from the pic.


I still have my Airfix in the stash so I'll have to take a closer look at mine now

It's clear to see the problems you have with this one Vaughan. :rolleyes:

There is an article in this month's Model Airplane International featuring a build of a test shot of this kit. They hinted about the potential for different marks from Revell with the forward fuselage sections and also mentioned that the wings appear to not be correct for an AEW variant. I was quite interested in this version but that review has made me think again for the time being so I will be watching the two Revel builds here with interest and how they compare to the Airfix Shackleton I have on my bench.

Just heared back from the model shop and they are going to refund me 25% of the original purchase price if I keep the model. I will have a go at cleaning and dipping the canopy in Klear to see if that works.:rolleyes:

Take the refund but keep at Revell for some replacement parts. This is not good enough and it is down to them to sort it out.

I agree with you Graham and I will contact them in due course, and as you can see this is not an isolated incident. Revell do have a habit of charging you for re-placement parts. I might use the refunded money to buy some resin weighted wheels from Hannants.

I needed to send three emails to Revell before I got a response. I emailed Revell Germany, as you are told to do, only to eventually receive a response from the UK. However, I was told the parts have to come from Germany so expect a wait of 4 to 6 weeks ! To their credit, there's been no mention of charging me, but they do want the unusable parts off me, for investigation.

At least they've responded interesting that the reply came from the UK and they only provide a UK postal address. Interestingly when my model arrived the outer boxing with the model code comes from Poland. I've just picked the Airfix Shackleton from my LMS and had a quick look. Yes there is no rivet detail at all although the box art shows beautiful rivet detail. The canopy glazing is perfectly clear and very thin. What I need to do is use the canopy, internal detail, weighted wheels of the Airfix model and the rest from the Revell model with it's fantastic rivet detail.

I've made a start on this one the glazings not great never heared back from Revell despite emailing them several times. After dipping in Klear they don't look too bad. All's gone together ok fits not briliant but hey its a Revell kit. I'm not going to town on the office like Colin has done. Hats off to him he doing a good job. For me this the first 1/72 scale kit I've built since I was a child and they came in a plastic bag and cost two and six. Anyway this is where I'm at. Next I've got to start thinking about masking the canopy which is going to be fun(not)

That cockpit glazing in the picture above doesn't look too bad at all! Nice to see this one underway.

Nice work thus far Vaughan. With all that glasswork, maybe investing in a pre-cut mask would be worth the purchase price?

I agree, it looks okay.


As an aside the one 'problem' visible on some of my old models is the clear parts. They seem to attract a difficult to remove patina of dust and other crap over the years. Some of them have become much less crystal clear than they once were.

Slowly coming together more dry fitting.

Small update as Colin has found out putty is required with this kit. I've buttoned up the fuselage and it requires putty along the whole length. There is a seam visible on the Shackleton at Duxford albeit the first section behind the canopy but at this scale it wouldn't be visible(it's hard to see in the photo but it's there). I've used white Squadron putty and Tamiya tape. Now's the fun of sanding it down.

So I've got that to look forward to as well - doh...........


Vaughan, have you found any other build reviews for this kit ? I've found lots of sprue reviews, but no else seems to be building.

No not as yet maybe too soon for any to be posted. A shame as would be interesting to see how others are coping will the build and having similar problems.

Thanks Ian, tail section is now together and guess what more gaps to fill this is not the 10,0000 flying rivet but the 10,000 flying putty.

Also forgot to mention I tried to fit the bomb bay doors in the closed position as there's no bombs to fit which might have looked good left open. DON'T as the doors don't fit they don't line up with the contour of the fuselage. I'll be glad when this ones finished!
