Yokosuka E-14Y ‘Glen’ with catapult

Almost there with this now . Ive given the whole airframe a coat of microscale flat to even everything out and got the floats glued on . The canopy has been de-masked -what a bugger that was !! The pre cut vinyl masks had stuck like ‘you know what to a blanket’ also leaving some glue residue which had to be removed with a cocktail stick wetted with ipa and repeated dabs with tamiya tape . Just the prop , aerial and bombs to add then its done , then I can think about making a submarine base for the catapult!

Submarine, SUBMARINE, S-U-B-M-A-R-I-N-E!!!!!!! We want to see the SUBMARINE!!!!!!!!!!....

Ok here we go , nothing ventured -nothing gained !
I initially though about making something out of card a la Ron and his weetabix landing craft but thought the tapering compound shape might be a bit too difficult . Then I found a strip of XPS foam board in the shed .This is the pink stuff they use when insulating various things when building houses , I must have picked it up sometime on a building site . Anyways its about 30 mm thick and plenty wide enough for my sub deck base .It should be easy enough to carve and sand to shape , might have to seal it with pva before painting though. Heres the pics

Now heres where it starts getting a bit messy and mr Dewire starts getting excited! Ive carved and sanded the main hull (pink foam) to shape and started on the other parts . I managed to procure an offcut of insulation off a building site I was delivering on which is thick enough for the next step. This was easily carved to shape and sanded to form the Hangar ( the bit that looks like a well licked choc ice! ) and the conning tower ( the bit on top of it) . The decks had wooden planking up to a point so to replicate this I‘m using plastic card , lightly scribed with a P cutter to form the planks .
BTW , is this the worst submarine ever ? Its made out of polystyrene foam - it’ll NEVER sink !!

Most impressed Tony with use of the insulation foam, and free to boot , always makes it better . What do you use to fill and get such a smooth surface ?

Just caught up wwith this, very impressed with the sub base.
I think there was a parts work to build the I-401, very impressive sub with an equally impressive hanger, the circular hanger door was very distinctive.

VERY messy jim ! It sands very easily , being just a bit firmer than florists oasis . Creates lots of fine dust that is very clingy, you have to be careful when holding it too , its easy to grip too hard and leave imprints .

Nothing as yet john , it just sands to a really smooth surface . Its still a bit porous though so the whole thing will have to be sealed with PVA or similar before painting ,cheers tony

Very nice build of the Glen, Tony and progress on part of the sub. What will you use to stiffen the foam...perhaps some resin after the pva coating.

Its fairly stiff richard just a bit porous , ive been experimenting on some offcuts and i think 2 coats of pva will be enough to smooth and seal it before the primer goes on . cheers tony

I've used it for wargaming terrain and a coat of emulsion was usually enough. That's basically coloured PVA.
