After a bit of detective work I’d say it looks like the rudder of a tornado gr1 and the wingfold of a buccaneer s2 in gulf colours:cool:

I thought the lower of the arrows pointed to the vague line visible near its tip in the yellowish surface …

A Soyuz capsule after it’s come back down to earth. The “when” could be a lot of times, but given that you’re probably British I would guess it’s the one your ISS visitor, whatshisname, went in, so it must have been … 18 June 2016.

Ah, it’s Gagarin’s Vostok, so the date is probably 12 April 1961. That photo looked very new to me, not 57 years old, but Google image search to the rescue :smiling3:

Looks American......it’s a big lad, but not big enough to be a big boy....
photo is a bit dark, so wild guess, is it some sort of Mallett?
Cheers

Just reread the question and would like to change my answer....is it an obsolete locomotive that has been converted to a stationary boiler, perhaps for carriage or station heating purposes? The chimney conversion on the smoke stack looks pretty permanent...and it can’t get out to a coaling stage as there is a chap filling the tender using a wheelbarrow...also, it isn’t in a loco depot, more likely a carriage shed or train shed at a station. No roof vents for smoke and too clean on the floor.

Yes, I’ll consider that a correct answer … It’s a space heater:

in the unfinished Chrysler tank factory in Detroit, ca. late 1940/early 1941. (Play the video to go straight to the bit I took the screenshot from.)
